'Minecraft Earth' Gets a Little More Physical Thanks to the new Minis that Are NFC-enabled

When the mobile-based Minecraft Earth was announced last year, it immediately attracted comparisons to Pokemon Go because of its use of virtual reality and activities that are based on location. But it was a different game (as senior editor Jess Conditt will attest) in that it didn't require players to go outside to play its mining and building gameplay. Now, Mattel has added another fun aspect to Minecraft Earth that Pokemon Go cannot boast about: NFC-enabled figurines. Gallery: Minecraft Earth minis | 14 Photos /14 The Boost Mini figurines will retail for $5 each, and feature a variety of characters from the Minecraft franchise that include Steve, Alex, creepers ducks, cows, and creepers. Each figurine is adorable on its own. If you put it in contact with an NFC-capable device, special abilities will be granted within Minecraft Earth for a specified time. The duration will be displayed via the timer. You'll also earn XP for signing up the mini in the game as a further incentive to collect all of them (or borrow from friends). The first batch of the spring season includes 20 minis that have 10 abilities. Mattel also offers a clip-on pouch that can be clipped to your belt to take your Minecraft Earth game with you on the go. Mattel introduced new $3.50 blind-box minis themed to vanilla Minecraft. They also have larger figures that measure 3.5 inches that connect with the upcoming Minecraft Dungeons. The Redstone Monstrosity, which is over six inches tall, is especially enjoyable because it's sized to match those toys. The 3.5-inch figurines cost $10 and the monstrosity is expected to retail for $25 when it is released in the fall. Plugins Get the latest news from Toy Fair 2020 here!
